Participation accounts for 15% of the mark in CCT460 – higher than is usually the case in most CCIT courses. This evaluation is divided into two components: Class participation and wiki activity related to the two major assignments. All the discussions we've had about open source development being communal is not just rhetoric, as is the case in the development community – you will be awarded for contributing to our collaborative, learning environment. Some additional context on the expectations for both of these evaluations:

Class Participation – 8% of final mark

Strong (7-8): Student consistently has valuable input during class, had good questions during the seminars AND consistently provides assistance to their peers during in-class work sessions.
Good (6): Student regularly volunteers in class with some helpful questions/observations during the seminars.
Adequate (5-5.5): Student rarely volunteers in class.
Needs Improvement (0-4.5): Student rarely/never volunteers in class and/or was consistently absent

Tech Support/Tutorials – 7% of final mark

The two major assignments in this course will require a steady and focused work ethic. To encourage experimentation and knowledge sharing while moving towards these goals, students will be evaluated on logging technical support requests (if things are going bad) and tutorials (if things are going good) with their peers. Additionally, students providing solutions to the technical issues reported by their peers will also receive marks.

Each tech support request/tutorial should provide enough text to outline the issue and incorporate screen captures where appropriate. The primary goal of this exercise is to provide reference material for the class, so marks will be awarded for clarity, utility (is the topic relevant?) and organization. The activity you've logged on the Tech Support & Tutorial Page will be checked twice this semester.
  • Monday July 30th 9AM (for your wiki activity for weeks 2 and 3)
  • Monday August 13th 9AM (for your wiki activity for weeks 4 and 5)

Excellent (6-7): Two or more technical issues reported or tutorials, or one impeccably written/documented one.
Adequate (4.5-5.5): A lucid support request or tutorial.
Needs Improvement (3-4): Incoherent or redundant support request or tutorial. (material that is hastily added to the wiki in the hours before the final deadline will probably be evaluated in this range).
No Wiki Participation: No wiki activity will result in a mark of 0.

Remember: you are being marked for your enthusiasm and your rigour here. To encourage the group to get started on this earlier rather than later, a bonus will be awarded to this mark for the first five students that post tutorials or support requests.
